a5c7b9f00b When the express elevators in the Millennium Building, one of New York's most famous landmarks, start to malfunction and behave in erratic ways, elevator mechanic Mark Newman is sent out to find the cause of the problems. His investigation meets unexpected resistance and not everybody seems to be happy with his involvement. After a gruesome and deadly incident, in which a blind man falls into the shaft and a security guard is decapitated, the police start an investigation. They are however not very successful. Mark is determined to find the cause. He is joined by a female reporter, Jennifer, who is looking for a juicy story. Together they try to unravel the secrets behind the mysterious behaviour of the elevator that seems to have a life of it's own. When things get worse and death toll rises, The Government, fearing terrorists are involved, seal off the building. What at first looked like a routine job turns into a horrifying nightmare in which Mark has to face an enemy whose blood thirst is only met by it's unpredictability. An enemy that is determined to fight off any intruder looking for the dark secret that lurks inside the belly of the building. An enemy that has to be feared. An enemy that has to be taken …….DOWN. I can't comprehend this movie. It was so ridiculous that I thought it might be a parody, buttime wore on, I realized that there was no sense of humor to it. There were some reasonably big names and it seemed like there was a lot of money behind it. But a horror movie based on a murdering elevator? Just don't go in there.

I also noticed that many of the performers looked downright embarrassed. There is a certain dead eyed expression an actor gets when they realize that they are involved in a real piece of garbage. Just pause this movie once or twice during a close up and you'll see exactly what I mean.

This was just painful in every respect. I can't believe that this was done by professionals. This was basically a movie written by an elevator repairman and meant for the enjoyment of other elevator repairmen. EVERYONE else should stay the hell away. I had seen 'The Lift' when I was a little kid…it was one of the weirdest movies I'd ever watched…so I remembered it. We have the video, and I've seen it more than a few times. And then I find 'The Shaft'…deciding to watch it. What amazes me is that there are not only plenty of famous actors in it…but just how funny it is! And most of the things in it…I doubt I would have foundhilarious, if I hadn't seen the original. The scene transitions range from decent, to gruesomely morbid and hilarious. While I didn't like the opening scene…the rest of it is just great. It's such a shame it wasn't in theaters, which is understandable…it having come out only 2 years after the whole 9/11 thing.
